37th THEYDON BOIS ANNUAL DONKEY DERBY Sunday 13th July

The Donkey Derby began in Victorian times as a day trip for London’s Eastenders but was revived in a modern setting in 1987. Organised by a village committee on behalf of the Scout & Guide charities, it is now a major annual attraction in the area.
This year’s event features six races with Tote betting on the seven donkeys in each race. There are also many sideshows, craft stalls, games and fairground rides, including swing boats and a big wheel for birds-eye views of the event.
Marvel at the vintage car and motorcycle displays but watch out for the sidecar-mounted machine gun! With lots to eat and drink from burgers to candy floss and Balti to popcorn it is certainly an event for all the family.
It’s free to join in on The Green at Theydon Bois from 12 noon (children’s races start at 12.15) but parking on-site is limited and there is a replacement bus service that weekend on the Underground.
